Outside Siena is no. V in the series of Italian views which can be said to have established the artist’s reputation. Completed in the spring and summer of 1953 these pictures, which included views of the Duomo in Florence and of Venice, were exhibited at the Redfern in the Autumn that year. The success of the show enabled the artist to buy the studio in Cornwall (formerly belonging to Stanhope Forbes) where he works to this day.
Feiler was born in Frankfurt and moved to this country in 1933. He studied at the Slade, alongside contemporaries such as Patrick Heron and Kenneth Armitage. He taught mainly at the West of England College of Art while living and painting in Cornwall, in loose association with other St Ives artists like Lanyon, Bryan Wynter and William Scott. The thick impasto of the present picture invites comparison with the work of Nicholas de Stael.
